This article further considers multidisciplinary lenses in theme park studies, particularly in terms of how these five characteristics can be assessed. Based on a comprehensive review and research synthesis, this article defines a theme park as a dedicated space featuring five main characteristics: thematic identity, closed space with controlled access, hybrid consumption, performative labor, and merchandising. These parks have been studied from various stances, yet a uniform definition and integrated framework remain lacking for theme park research and practice. Theme parks have attracted extensive scholarly attention within and outside the tourism literature. Based on these, a framework had been developed for benchmarking of service quality of different amusement parks. The paper identifies various service quality attributes of amusement parks and an evaluation scheme for those attributes had been developed. The developed framework using the hybrid methodology of AHP and TOPSIS can be applied for comparing different amusement parks based on quality attributes, which will help the organizers in improving their service quality. For sustaining in the industry, the managers of the parks need to have a good overview of the practices followed by them and their competitors that necessitate benchmarking of the service quality. Their service quality is constituted by the attainment of certain quality attributes that varies with different parks. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for benchmarking the service quality of amusement parks.Ī hybrid approach, which is a combination of AHP (analytic hierarchy process) and TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), is applied for service quality benchmarking.Īmusement parks are centers of attraction at various tourist destinations across the world. The contributions of this research are aligned with that put forward by the 2030 Vision of KSA, which considers the promotion of “recreational development” a necessary step to achieve environmental, economic, and social sustainability for the Saudi society. In addition to articulating the most significant contributions of IRCs and the most important constraints facing them, the research was able to provide a number of policies and measures useful in guiding the development of new IRCs in KSA and Dammam Metropolitan Area (DMA) in support of sustainable development. To achieve this goal, the research used a documentary inductive approach, which includes a review of related literature and an applied approach that includes field surveys of a random sample of 160 experts and officials. This research aims to study the potential contributions of IRCs to sustainable development in KSA, the constraints facing them, and effectuation policies to support their applications. Lower prevalence of malfunctions in North America suggests value of professional development for mechanics and inspectors and strong regulation to promote international safety standards.ĭespite the importance of integrated recreation cities (IRC) to the wellbeing of individuals, families, and society, there is only one IRC which is under development in Saudi Arabia (KSA). Occurrence as a proportion of attendance was highest in Latin America, predominantly involving mechanical non-tracked rides water attractions predominated in North America. Just 11 reports involved improper rider action, 12 involved failure of reasonable action, and 11 involved medical conditions or reactions. In waterparks, drowning or near-miss of drowning was most common (27 cases). The most common event type with fixed-site and mobile rides was ride malfunction (63 cases). Fixed-site rides (amusement and theme parks), mobile rides, and waterparks were involved with a similar number of cases. Mechanical rides and roller coasters were involved in 87 events. Over the year, 182 accident events were reported, from 38 countries, of which 51 events involved a fatality. Media reports provided limited detail and almost certainly omitted some events but remain the only publicly available data on a global scale. The study compiled and classified reports in international media coverage for a one-year period, analysing event type, ride type, operation type, and regional location. This study describes worldwide occurrence of accidents involving amusement rides.
